Get the facts about Jacksonville University engineering technician, registering for elective courses, and taking free tests online. Engineering is one of the fastest-growing employment areas, for several strong reasons. As technical progress permeates industrial processes in manufacturing, food technology and agriculture, engineers are increasingly in demand. If you complete the engineering technician program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as heating science, ventilation systems, or refrigeration methods. Further, due to advances in building technology, there is a growing shortage of HVAC technician graduates, and of skilled engineering technicians in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Jacksonville University.

In modern buildings the design, installation, and control systems of various functions are integrated into one or more HVAC systems. Heaters exist for various types of fuel, including solid fuels, liquids, and gases. Another type of heat source is electricity, used in baseboard heaters. Alternatively, warm air may be distributed through duct work systems using metal or fiberglass ducts. Many systems use the same ducts to distribute air cooled by an evaporator coil for air conditioning. Because an air conditioner moves heat between the indoor coil and the outdoor coil, both must be kept clean. This means that you must regularly clean the condenser coil, in addition to replacing the air filter at the evaporator coil.

Engineering technician may receive training from technical schools or community colleges that offer technical training in heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration. These programs generally last from 6 months to 2 years, and lead to a certificate or an associate’s degree. The median annual wage for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration engineering technicians was $45,110 as of May 2015. Further, employment of engineering technician graduates is projected to grow 14 percent over the next decade, much faster than average.

Architectural Design

As the complexity of buildings has increased, the field of architecture has become multi-disciplinary, with specializations for each project type. In addition, there has been an increased differentiation of the design architect from the project architect who ensures that a given construction project meets required standards. The preparatory processes in the design of any large building have become quite complicated, and may require preliminary studies of such matters as durability, sustainability, and compliance with local building codes.

A recent shift in architectural thought has prompted architecture schools to focus more on the environment. Sustainability in architecture was pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright, Buckminster Fuller, and by green architects such as Ian McHarg and Sim Van der Ryn. Concepts include passive solar building design, greener roof designs, biodegradable materials, and more attention to a structure's energy usage.

Engineering Job Listings

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.
